Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme...

2499 Squadron was the premier unit supporting the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (DEAS) in Thames Valley Wing during 2002/2003. We are still rated in the top five units in the Wing and continue to provide cadets with support and advice to complete their awards.

Remember that the spirit of the award requires the participant (you) to plan, organise and do the sections required. You cannot be spoon fed or otherwise "piloted" through. If you find yourself stuck or unsure of any element of the Scheme then remember that the Squadron has a Senior Cadet NCO and a Civilian Instructor dedicated to the Scheme for your assistance.

Skill, Service and Physical Sections
Details of programmes and ideas for the skill, service and physical sections can be found in the Programmes file, held by the DEAS Officer. It is available for you to browse through during canteen or even take home for an in-depth read.

The Squadron also runs some programmes of its own which can be used for various sections of the award:

  Ceremonial Drill    -    Skill Section
  Event Planning    -    Skill Section
  Marksmanship    -    Skill Section
Air Training Corps    -    Service Section

If any of these programmes interest you then talk to the NCO ic DEAS for further details.

Expeditions and Explorations
The Squadron runs two DEAS expeditions for Bronze and/or Silver Level per year. These are usually held in May and September.

A practice and a qualifying venture for Silver Level explorations are run by Thames Valley Wing around May every year.

Gold Level ventures require more planning and a higher level of supervision. Currently the best way of obtaining this section is to attend the National Air Cadet Adventure Training Centre at Winderemere or Llanbedr during the Thames Valley Wing annual expeditions. Check your Wing Calendar for these dates. If you wish to make your Gold Level venture during one of these weeks you must inform the DEAS Officer at least four months in advance of the expedition.

Annual Camp can be used for the Residential at Gold Level. You cannot attend the same week as the Squadron and authorisation from HQ TVW must be gained in advance. Around two months notice is required.

To register your interest for any TVW DEAS activities then talk to the NCO ic DEAS in the first instance.
