Competitions
Competition shooting is the natural progression on from the Marksmanship Scheme. Rather than just working towards their own badges, cadets
move on to shoot for their team, the Squadron or in some cases Thames Valley Wing. Marksmanship is a very individual sport, but winning teams are
those which foster a spirit of teamwork. In contrast to the Marksmanship Scheme, individual scores are only important in relation to the team's score. This is an extra challenge
which potential team members must be able to conquer. However it is always nice for a team to have the best individual score trophy for
a competition in addition to the competition trophy!
Competitions are available for all types of shooting with all of the rifles. 2499 competes in several small bore competitions with both the
No8 rifle and also precision Anschuetz and BSA target rifles. In 2004 we qualified for the second round of the Battle of Britain Challenge Cup
for the first time in many years.
The ATC has a full-bore target rifle for use by cadets, the L81A2 Cadet Target Rifle. The rifle was introduced into Thames Valley Wing during
2005 and the first target rifle competition was run in January 2006 after poor weather in December 2005. 2499 Squadron were proud to win this
competition and became the first recepient of the Hank Austin Memorial Trophy. The team also won the first and second place best Male Shot and the best Female Shot.
|
In the interim, Thames Valley Wing had been using the L98A1 for target rifle shooting, as well as its normal usage for the marksmanship
scheme. The Squadron full-bore team used the L98A1 to win the Thames Valley Wing Annual Competition in 2003 and 2004. In 2004 we also won the best individual male and female competitions.
Both years were "a close run thing" and 2005 promised to be no different, but 2499 was up for the challenge.
The 2005 competition saw the first award of the Hank Austin Memorial Trophy. 2499 was lucky enough to win this trophy and also the
best individual male and female shots again. See the gallery page for photographs.
